Maxtor and WD have decided their warranties start the day the unit is manufactured. How long will it take other manufacturer's to follow suit? It's amazing what big business can get away with as long as the FTC is controlled by them.

That's the way it is unless you can prove purchase date, or send in that stupid registration card with the info on it. Then again, I stay away from both companies.. WD hasn't made anything 'good' in over 5+yrs, Maxtor's never impressed me, and actually ticked me off when they bought out Quantums HD division.. I only hope Hitachi does something good with the acquisition of IBM HD division. I'll continue to support Seagate and Fujitsu...

We've (meaning the computer company I work for) had to return about 10 of the 80GB SATA Seagate hard drives because they failed without any notice...meaning one day you were running fine and the next time you rebooted your computer completely failed. I've lost a lot of confidence in Seagate over the failed drives. One or two failures in a year might be possible, but 10 in a three-month period?

I can see the 10 in 3 months worry rate.. That would get me on edge too.. But so does the whole SATA thing... I mean, what's the point? Somebody thought, "We've gotta catch SCSI".. In their poor attempt, they said, "We'll create a 'new' interface, with a new cabling system, and a new motto..".. Yea, sure they have one maybe two 10k SATA drives.. Big deal.. How long has SCSI had that and how reliable are SCSI systems.. I mean, just give it up already... Personally, IDE is for Joe Average.. SATA is for Joe Average who makes bank.. SCSI is for Joe Hardcore.. Another thing that gets me is the wave of "Raid" on mobo's.. Gimme a break, it's one lil chip that runs two to four drives and is generally made by cheap companies like Highpoint or Promise.. People flock in droves.. What ever happend to real hardcore guys who went out, paid their bank for "real" raid hardware.. A chip per channel.. That's real Raid.. This newfangled stuff is for <beeeeep>...

I'll end this OT rant with these words.. I loved Quantum (damn Maxtor!) and enjoy Fujitsu HW.. I hope Hitachi does good as there's less and less "quality" HW being made for 'real' powerusers..
