Get free ubuntulinux cd

Anyone tried this? I've used Linspire, but haven't been all that thrilled.

It is based on debian distro. I replaced my SuSE 9.1 with ubuntu.

So far everything including my wireless network is working with the ubuntu.

only one issue,I have is, not able to get my web cam working

Popular

Ubuntu has become quite popular. If you want to try it without installing, there is a live cd version (similar to knoppix), just pop it in the drive and boot to it. Also take a look at kubuntu which uses kde instead of gnome.

if the cam isn't working its not the operating system, its your inability to install it on the system.

read up on how to install things, unix commands aren't too complicated

thanks, I am working on it. But I am not sure that a newbie will be interested in compiling the kernal

I personally prefer freebsd. It comes with standard utilities in the default kernal, plus it includes every port (basically) ever made for linux systems.

Just got my CDs today. The install CD also comes with a live one so that you can test it before installing it on your hard disk drive. I like this version compared to Linspire.

I got it about a week ago and installed it as a secondary OS on this computer. My monitor wasn't fully supported though, and it took me a little bit of searching on the Internet to figure out how to allow resolutions other that 640x480. Once I did that it worked great. http://www.ubuntuguide.org is a good site for help on doing specific things with it (such as making it automatically mount my Windows partition readonly).

Free Ubuntu Linux CD's Shipped Free

The people behind Ubuntu linux are making it available free of charge via postal mail. Your order will include, I believe, at least 5 copies of an install cd and a 'live' cd so that you can try it without having to install. Ubuntu linux has quickly become one of the most popular linux distributions mainly because the team is so commited creating and supporting a professional and polished desktop operating system. My favorite feature of ubuntu is the package manager that lets you simply choose the software you want installed from a list and it is downloaded, installed, and configured automatically for you. It couldn't be easier. Enjoy.

and here's a description from http://www.ubuntu.com/ubuntu

Ubuntu is a free, open source operating system that starts with the breadth of Debian and adds regular releases (every six months), a clear focus on the user and usability (it should "Just Work", TM) and a commitment to security updates with 18 months of support for every release. Ubuntu ships with the latest Gnome release as well as a selection of server and desktop software that makes for a comfortable desktop experience off a single installation CD.

What makes Ubuntu special? Why do people choose Ubuntu as their favourite OS for work and play?

Regular and Predictable Releases
The Ubuntu team releases a fresh Ubuntu every six months. It includes the latest kernel, X, Gnome and other key applications, and is supported with security updates for 18 months. You can download the CD and burn it yourself or have us ship you a CD.

Absolutely Free of Charge
Ubuntu is Free Software, and available to you free of charge. It's also Free in the sense of giving you rights of Software Freedom, but you probably knew that already! Unlike many of the other commercial distributions in the free and open source world (Libranet, Lindows, Xandros, Red Hat) the Ubuntu team really does believe that Free software should be free of software licencing charges.

Fast, Easy Install
Ubuntu doesn't have a pretty graphical installer, it has a FAST and EASY installer. OK, there are still a couple of places where you need to know what you are doing, but the defaults will work for most people. We have kept the distribution installation CD set down to one single CD, everything else is available online if you need it. On a typical computer, the Ubuntu installation should be done in less than 25 minutes.

The installer may not be GUI, but you only ever need to use it once, because we support ongoing upgrades via the network, from version to version. You never need to reinstall the operating system, just upgrade from each released version to the next when you want to.

Immediately Useful
When you finish your Ubuntu installation your system is immediately usable. You have a full set of business productivity applications, internet applications, drawing and graphics applications, and games. That one CD gives you a very good desktop environment out of the box, with many applications for business, home and personal computer users installed by default. There are thousands of additional pieces of software that are just a few clicks away, but we've done the hard work to get the basics in place easily and effectively.

Thanks, leobaby! I'm getting them mailed to me!

You shame us with your seven posts. ;)

You're welcome; but don't you just love how my rather insightful post as a new thread gets moved and tacked onto the bottom of a single line post almost a year old with an outdated url.
