I was just wondering because I have been having really bad muscle cramps from the heat, and found out that I have low blood calcium and wondered what I needed to do.The ER doctor has ordered me to chew two Tums a day.
Has anyone heard of low blood calcium?:convinced:

Oh.....I do not have a regular doctor yet as my hubby's insurance has not became effective yet. Thanks guys.

I'm not a doctor, but know something about nutrition. Tums will work great, and yes, low blood calcium is a real problem.
Make sure you eat a banana or two a week to keep the potassium up, that way you don't get leg and foot cramps at night.

Thanks Dan,but I don't like bananas.Anything else I can eat?I mean if I must eat a banana...then so be it,I will.:bigok:
Is that one of the reasons I have been getting really bad muscle cramps?Hmm...I didn't know. That was one of the reasons I did not pass my swim test..bad muscle cramps.

Thanks so much. The cramps hit me like a ton of bricks I thought I was going to drown.

I did the two-Tums-a-day thing when I was nursing Kadin. The dairy products irritated his tummy, so doc told me to supplement with Tums - be sure to get the assorted fruit - they arent too bad!

I used to have to eat bananas all the time when I played basketball in highschool and got leg cramps. I don't like them much either, but I did what I had to do.....
Raisins and baked potatoes (with the skin) also have lots of potassium. Hope those awful cramps go away!!

There are many reasons why one would have hypocalcemia (low blood calcium). One of the reason is a problem with a parathyroid hormonal secretion (which could be checked with a blood test). other possible reason is a poor calcium absorption due to different malabsorption syndromes. I would ask you doctor to do some more blood tests to get to the bottom of this....

Also, DanC is right - you need adequate potassium supplementation for good calcium absorption.

It is VERY important for you to stretch. Constantly.....throughout the day. I take a stretch break every 2 hours and haven't had any leg cramps in a long time.
Where are you cramping up at? My guess would be the legs. If you want I can tell you specific stretches to do to prevent and relieve cramps.

AMA Warning!

I have just been advised by the AMA (American Medical Association) that there is doctorly advice being given out over the web. (In my real life I work for a health insurance compnay)

The AMA is concerned that giving out such free advice 'over the web' will cut into doctor fees, hospital charges, lab test, in essence free advice will kill the AMA community.

I must insist that you all stop or I will be forced to turn you all in for the reward.:wof:

Yuck...

Wow, I'm surprised that Tums is so widely prescribed. Its active ingredient- Calcium carbonate-is a really poor source of calcium. Plus, it has nasty additives & can have side effects . There are other types of calcium which are more easily digested & assimilated like calcium citrate. Tums also contains aluminum & lead. Ewww

You guys are weird, ....How can somebody NOT like the taste of Bananas?? Please Explain!:noidea:

Do you like ripe avocadoes?

Thanks Dan,but I don't like bananas.Anything else I can eat?I mean if I must eat a banana...then so be it,I will.:bigok:

These have lots of potassium.

Tums are just calcium carbonate.

Why not take a multivitamin instead? You might not be getting the rest of your minerals.

I have heard of calcium overdose from eating too many tums. Its not pretty.
